National Museum, Delhi Overview
National Museum has collection of pre-historic to historical elements and is among best places to visit in Delhi with whole family. Commonly recognized as the National Museum of India, the National Museum is located in the capital city. The museum was founded in 1949. It has an exquisite range of products that date back to the pre-historic period. Additionally, the museum houses modern artwork and articles from the British Era. National Museum has a total of 206,000 articles. Some of the major artworks one can find here are Carved Wood Vahanas, Dancing Girl, Jade Collection, Ivory Carved Tusk, Akota Bronzes, and so on.
Gwyer Committee suggested the plan of constructing a national museum in India a year before India got independence. Today, the museum serves as a tourist attraction. National Museum is a perfect example of the incredible combination of historical and modern pieces of art. Even though its collection exceeds 200,000, the museum only shows 7% of its articles. Currently, the museum has plenty of departments (each holding specific types of articles). These departments are Paintings, Manuscripts, Jewelry, Anubhav, Publication, Display, Public Relations, Arms & Armors, Archaeology, Central Asian Antiquities, Anthropology, Conservation, and more. Each department holds different items. For example, Arms & Armors feature weapons, ritual and smashing weapons, firearms, war accessories, and armor for soldiers.
Currently, the Ministry of Culture is responsible for the preservation and maintenance of the National Museum. This double-storey architecture is divided into different chambers to help visitors get a clear insight into the specific type of articles. If you are interested in decorative arts and Central Asian Antiquities, you can straight head to this chamber. You will need at least 2-3 hours to explore the entire museum, considering the fact that it holds 200,000 articles. The museum is open every day except for Monday. Opening hours for the visitors are between 10 AM and 6 AM. So, plan your trip accordingly.
